HICONSUMPTION gets a second shoutout for treating this release like a real ownership test, not a desk-shot unboxing. The community nickname “Darth Vader” comes from the sandblasted black ceramic dial and that single varnished red chronograph hand. Against the matte black face, the red sweep almost floats, and it is the detail that turns another blacked-out Speedy into something you remember.

On paper the case is large: about 44.25 mm across, a long lug-to-lug, and just over 13 mm thick. Omega has kept that big Dark Side footprint for more than a decade, so this will never be a small-wrist watch. What changes the story is mass and height. Full zirconium oxide ceramic is lighter than steel, and switching the lineup to a hand-wound movement drops the profile by roughly two millimeters versus the older automatic Dark Sides. On a mid-size wrist it still reads big, but it sits flatter and feels less top-heavy than the previous generation.

Finishing is the other leap. Polished and brushed ceramic planes meet at sharp bevels, the bezel tachymeter is filled in liquid metal, and the crown and pushers stay ceramic. Water resistance is fifty meters without a screw-down crown. Flip the watch and a sapphire caseback frames the black-edition Calibre 9908: column-wheel chronograph, coaxial escapement, Master Chronometer certification, about sixty hours of reserve, and a clean view of the movement because there is no rotor in the way. A independent hour hand for quick time-zone jumps is a quiet everyday win.

The dial uses a two-level black ceramic plate with laser-sandblasted texture, blackened indexes, and black Super-LumiNova that glows green at night. Layout is a clean two-register chronograph with small seconds at nine and stacked minute and hour counters at three—no date. Legibility is the honest trade-off. In good light the polished edges of the hands catch enough to read; in flat light many owners will track the red hand first. HICONSUMPTION frames that as a design choice, not a failed tool watch: you buy into the monochrome concept, or you buy a Moonwatch.

The stock black rubber strap mirrors the case finishing on top and hides a lunar crater pattern underneath, locked with a ceramic fold-over clasp on ceramized titanium hardware. A coated nylon fabric strap is available at the same list price. The odd 21 mm lug width makes aftermarket straps more annoying than they should be, so most owners will likely stick with what ships on the watch.

Value is the hard part. A Moonwatch Professional costs far less, ceramic pilot chronographs from other houses undercut this piece, and a steel Daytona sits in a similar retail band. HICONSUMPTION’s take is that the Vader is expensive but not irrational if you want full ceramic inside and out, a METAS-certified manual-wind black caliber, and the strongest Dark Side finishing yet. It is not the sensible Speedy. It is the blacked-out design object for collectors who already own a Moonwatch and want the loudest modern Dark Side.
