Video Overview

Small Swiss Army knives still sell by the truckload, but the red 58 mm lineup has barely changed in years. In this video, Jonathan from Jon Gadget looks at Keyport’s Versa58 system — modular aluminum and titanium scales that snap onto those classic mini SAKs and add a deep-carry clip, USB-C light, flash drive, pen, and more. He pulls the old Celidor scales, clicks the new modules on, and tests the idea on a Midnite Manager, Classic SD, and Jetsetter. Big thanks to Jon Gadget for a clear, hands-on first look. Editor’s Insight

What makes this review land is how simple the problem is. People love the classic 58 mm Victorinox knives, but they want a pocket clip, a better light, a modern flash drive, or a pen on the model they already own. Victorinox has put energy into the premium Alox Companion and Refined lines, yet the core red range still feels frozen. Keyport is trying to fill that gap with scales you can swap in seconds instead of waiting for a factory redesign. Thanks again to Jon Gadget for walking through install, remove, and real carry use instead of stopping at a table dump.

The Clip Scale Module answers the deep-carry request with anodized aluminum (titanium planned at launch) and a scale-tool slot that still takes the stock tweezers, toothpick, or a Tortoise Gear Firefly Mini ferro rod. The Flare Module is Jonathan’s favorite: USB-C rechargeable, a usable low front beam, a bright mode, and a side flood that does not blind the room. It is thicker than Victorinox’s built-in Midnite Manager light, but it works on any 58 mm host, not just the two factory light models. The USB-C drive module (64 GB or 256 GB) rotates open on tiny sprung bearings and outclasses the older 32 GB Jetsetter drive. The pen module uses a replaceable Troika-style refill at roughly factory pen thickness. A plain V-Scale covers the clean aluminum or titanium look with one tool slot. MagMount plates let two modules stick together without a knife, though Jonathan prefers keeping a real SAK in the middle so you still get scissors, blade, or airport-friendly tools.

Install is the surprise. Slide a thin blade under the old Celidor scales, twist free, then seat the module on the four rivet heads and push until the spring clip clicks. Removal is press-and-push once you learn the motion. Jonathan notes that dry scale pulls can strip plastic at the rivets, so hot-water softening helps if you plan to reuse the factory scales — Felix Immler’s linked method is the careful path. On an older red-LED Midnite Manager he swaps to the Flare light for a real upgrade. On a promo Classic SD he runs clip plus Flare and likes both the look and the pocket access. On a Jetsetter he adds pen and USB for a flight-friendly document and photo backup tool, with the option to strip the modules if security gets weird. Rough list pricing he heard was about $60 for a two-module starter plus MagMounts in aluminum before Kickstarter discounts, with modules also sold alone and worldwide shipping.

If you already own a drawer of 58 mm knives, Versa58 is less about buying a new multi-tool and more about waking up the ones you stopped carrying. Treat the module list as a menu: clip for pocket access, Flare for light, drive and pen for travel, ferro rod for a tiny fire option. Quality and fit impressed Jonathan more than he expected, helped by Max Level EDC consulting and Keyport’s long modular-tool history. As always, check live campaign or retail status before you buy — Kickstarter timing and final prices move.

Closing Remarks

That is Jon Gadget’s take on the Keyport Versa58: modular scales that turn a plain 58 mm Victorinox into a customizable mini EDC platform without waiting on the factory. The gear list above links the system, the ferro rod, the host knives, and the related Alox models so you can rebuild what you saw.
