MOLLE / ALPAKA | Fidlock Hook 20

MOLLE / ALPAKA | Fidlock Hook 20 — 3D Printed EDC

Why I Like It

If you use Fidlock hardware, you already know how good the magnetic snap-and-twist closure system is. It’s fast, one-handed, and rated for serious load. The problem is that Fidlock hardware isn’t cheap, and the mounting options are limited if your gear runs MOLLE. This print bridges that gap — it’s a MOLLE-compatible base that interfaces directly with the Fidlock Hook 20, giving you magnetic quick-release attachment points on any PALS webbing.

The ALPAKA connection here is worth noting. ALPAKA makes some of the most refined minimalist carry gear on the market — their bags and organizers are built around exactly this kind of modular thinking. This print extends that ecosystem to your existing MOLLE platform without buying new bags.

For print settings, this one benefits from high infill (50%+) and 4+ walls — the Fidlock hook puts lateral force on the mount when you’re pulling at angles. PETG works well, but ASA is worth the extra effort if you’re running this on outdoor gear or a duty belt that sees real weather. The click-and-release cycle on Fidlock hardware is satisfying in a way that’s hard to describe — once you’ve used it, standard buckles feel prehistoric.

What Filament Should You Use?

Here’s a quick breakdown of the three most common filaments for EDC gear so you can pick the right one for your setup:

Filament Hardness UV Resistance Durability Best For
PETG Medium Fair High Everyday indoor/EDC carry, food-safe prints, flexible-tough balance
ABS High Poor High Rigid structural parts, heat-resistant applications (e.g. car/glove box gear)
ASA High Excellent ☀️ Very High Outdoor EDC, belt/bag attachments, anything exposed to sun or weather

TL;DR: Use PETG for most EDC prints — easy to work with and tough enough. Use ASA if the piece will live outdoors or in direct sunlight. Use ABS if you need maximum rigidity and heat resistance and have an enclosure on your printer.
